MASCOT RECRUITMENT CLINIC & TEAM SELECTION

DATE
Sunday, April 13, 2025

DESCRIPTION

This clinic is designed to give instruction and practice opportunities for those who want to be considered for a position on the 2025-26 mascot team, followed by a performance and evaluation to select mascot team members for next year. No experience required! However, this clinic is mandatory to be considered for next year’s team.

Next year's team will be made up of 7-8 performers, all of whom must be able to perform as our main character, Smokey, at events and appearances. One of these Smokeys will also be assigned to the role of Davy Crockett for football games, home basketball games, and appearances. Those who are interested in filling the role of Davy must first be selected as one of the Smokeys. A selection process for Davy will then follow once team practices begin. Similarly, the role of Junior Smokey, when needed, will be filled from the Smokey team.

The day will begin with instruction and practice on the basics of mascotting and the Smokey character. This will include:

  • Smokey walk and character development, including signature moves
  • Rocky Top choreography
  • VOLS Spell Out choreography
  • Let’s Go UT choreography
  • Improv training and practice
  • Skit development and practice

The instruction and practice time will be evaluated by coaching staff and mascot instructors. Depending on the number of participants, a first round cut may take place following the morning session. After the morning session of practice and instruction, each participant will then formally present each of the skills above, performing as Smokey, for a panel of evaluators. Coaching staff will announce the final team selection via email on Monday, April 14 at 8pm.

Specific details regarding location and other information, including instructional videos to allow participants to practice and have an understanding of what will be taught and evaluated, will be sent after successful registration.
