NOTE

Due to the CoronaVirus and social distancing measures that are currently in place, tryouts for the UT Spirit Program will be conducted online for cheer, dance, and mascots for the first two rounds and a potential in person evaluation for the final round. The online tryouts for cheer and dance will consist of a series of video submissions, with the first video to be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo and the link posted online. All of the information for your tryout video will be sent to you after submitting your application, including instructions for posting your link.
 
Round 1 - Videos submitted March 26, invitations to Round 2 sent April 5
Round 2 - Live Zoom evaluations April 9-11, invitations to Round 3 sent April 23
Round 3 - Live Zoom or in-person if possible (TBD) May 7-8
 
The deadline for all applications and first video submission is Friday, March 26 at 11pm Eastern Time.
 
Please only provide video with the skills requested for your Round 1 submission! It will not benefit you to show additional skills. In fact, your ability to follow directions will be part of the evaluation!
 
The following skills will be evaluated for Dance in your first video submission due March 26:
 
  • Personal Introduction (name, hometown/state, studio/dance team)
  • Solo - one minute in length. Please choose a style of dance that highlights your personal movement, skills, and strengths. Please submit a video of a solo performance from the past 6 months (practice or competition) or a team performance from this past season, indicating your starting position. 
  • Game Day - learn game day material provided to showcase your sideline technique and etiquette. Include crowd effective spirit raising as a lead in and ending to the choreography that is provided. Instructional video will be sent to you when you submit the application. 
  • Skills – See below.  An example video will be sent to you when you submit the application.
  1. Pirouettes (showcase pirouettes in one single video take - do not splice)
    *prep into quad - prep into quad - prep into as many pirouettes as you can do|
    *end pirouettes in second position in relevé  Please do not jump out landing.  
  2. Aerials (right and left)
  3. Jumps - switch arabesque, rotating coupé center
  4. Flexibility - rotating leg (example: leg turn) and stationary leg (example: controlled tilt)
  5. Toe Touch
  6. Advanced Turn Combo
  7. Additional Skills of your choice - no more than 3 additional skills (this can include a tumbling pass)
    *please follow the exact order listed and demonstrated in example video

The following skills will be evaluated for Cheer in your first video submission due March 26:

  • Personal Introduction (30 second limit: name, hometown, cheer team/gym, brief description of why you want to be on the Tennessee Cheer Team, and why you want to attend the University of Tennessee.)
  • Tumbling: to be demonstrated on grass or dead floor.
    • Standing back tuck
    • Back handspring back tuck
    • Specialty standing pass (i.e. standing full, one to full, two to full)
    • Running roundoff back handspring full (or your best running pass)
    • Optional specialty pass (i.e. whips, arabian, full to full) 
  • Gameday Stunts (chair, extension, platform lib, immediate lib, hands walk back to shouder, toss platform lib, full up platform lib, and heel stretch or arabesque with twisting dismount)
  • Two part stunt combination
  • Motion drill - instructional video will be sent to you when you submit the application
  • Sideline Chant - instructional video will be sent to you when you submit the application

The following skills will be evaluated for Mascots in your first video submission due March 26:

  • Personal Introduction
  • Description and explanation of the Smokey character in your own words
  • 60 second skit as the character of your choice (example video will be sent via email)
  • Demonstrate the Smokey walk and Smokey poses (instructional video will be sent via email)
  • An interest meeting and Q and A session will take place the week before video submissions are due.

All of Tennessee Sports Camps are open to any and all entrants (limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender).

Note: The University may postpone or cancel this event due to circumstances or conditions beyond its control, such as, but not limited to, natural disasters, acts or war, acts of God, or public health emergencies. Neither party shall be liable for damages for delay or default if such delay or default is caused by circumstances or conditions beyond its control, such as, but not limited to, natural disasters, acts of war, acts of God, or health emergencies. The Parties will consult with other to determine if the event can be rescheduled. -- It is not permissible for boosters to provide expenses for individuals to attend any of the Tennessee Sports Camps. Expenses include but are not limited to, lodging meals, transportation, and/or camp tuition.
